Also called EAN-13, EAN code, product barcode
A barcode is a code printed as bars and spaces so a scanner can read it in a fraction of a second. Most packaged goods in India carry an EAN-13 barcode, a 13-digit number issued through GS1 India. Codes registered in India usually start with 890.
For a shop, the barcode is what makes billing fast and accurate. Typing product names leads to wrong items and wrong prices at the counter. A scan picks the exact product, pack size and price every time, so stock counts stay right as well.
Loose items need their own codes. A weighing scale can print a label that holds both the item and its weight. Scan a label for 0.750 kg of toor dal at ₹160 a kilo and the bill line reads ₹120. Kownt X reads these weighing-scale barcodes at the counter, through the phone camera or any keyboard-style scanner.
